Pedro Albizu Campos (1891 – 1965) was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and rose from humble beginnings to become one of the island’s most brilliant and influential figures. A gifted student, he earned scholarships to the University of Vermont and later to Harvard, where he completed both undergraduate studies and a law degree—becoming the first Puerto Rican graduate of Harvard Law School in 1921.

Fluent in six languages and known for his commanding intellect, Albizu excelled in literature, philosophy, and political theory, earning admiration from professors and peers alike. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, an experience that deepened his understanding of global struggles for justice and equality.

Upon returning to Puerto Rico, he became a respected attorney and orator, ultimately leading the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. Albizu devoted his life to advocating for the political, social, and economic advancement of Puerto Rico, inspiring generations through his eloquence, scholarship, and unwavering belief in human dignity. His life story continues to resonate as an enduring symbol of perseverance, intellect, and moral conviction.

Why This Portrait Matters

The unveiling of this portrait is both a celebration and an invitation—a celebration of a remarkable Harvard alumnus whose life embodied scholarship, courage, and purpose, and an invitation to reflect on the shared ideals that unite all members of the Harvard community.

By honoring Albizu Campos, Harvard extends its tradition of recognizing those who have expanded the frontiers of thought and leadership. His portrait stands as a timeless reminder that excellence knows no boundaries of background or origin, and that the pursuit of knowledge and justice belongs to everyone.
